 About the chorus

CantaLyrica is a mixed-voice chamber chorus led by conductor Joshua Greene.

For more than a decade, we have brought to area audiences a rich variety of music written by composers ranging from the Renaissance to the present day – everything from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess to Bizet’s Carmen to Bach’s Singet dem Herrn to Brahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzes.

Music Director Greene is an assistant conductor at the New York Metropolitan Opera. He has prepared and conducted choruses, soloists and orchestras for many kinds of venues and has accompanied renowned singers in recital. He teaches voice, piano and conducting in his New York studio, where he coaches many Metropolitan and New York City Opera soloists.

Mr. Greene brings brilliant interpretations and subtle dynamics to every concert he conducts, to the joy of his audiences. His knowledge of repertoire is extensive, and he has great expertise in creating a unique, blended and colorful choral sound.

CantaLyrica’s annual subscription series consists of two major performances in Bergen County, New Jersey. The chorus also makes occasional guest appearances. Concerts feature professional instrumentalists from leading New York City area orchestras and soloists from the Metropolitan and New York City Opera, among other venues. There also are solo opportunities for chorus members.

Guest artists have included stellar singers like Carolyn James, Kirstin Chávez, Amy Burton, Judith Engel, Cherie Caluda, Jane Bunnell, Mark Embree, Woodrow Bynum, James Archie Worley and others and gifted instrumentalists such as French horn player Scott Brubaker of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, pianist/organist Linda Sweetman-Waters, harpist Elaine Christy, and of course our wonderful accompanist, Mitchell Vines, and Mr. Greene himself as pianist.

In addition to our concerts, we produce a popular Cabaret/Auction every year – a gala showcase for our talented members. In the spring, we sponsor a benefit concert featuring  singers and instrumentalists who are well known throughout the New York metropolitan area.

CantaLyrica’s singers are dedicated volunteer musicians — teachers, journalists, novelists, performers, business executives, computer programmers, artists and students. We have one thing in common: the love of choral music and the desire to share that beautiful music with our Bergen County audiences.

We welcome experienced singers to our chorus. Rehearsals are held from 7:45 – 10 p.m. Wednesday evenings at the Bergen County Academies, Hackensack Avenue, Hackensack, New Jersey (just off Route 4). To arrange an audition, call (201) 837-1734.
